Overview

Art that stays behind when people can’t

In mid-2015, Portuguese artist Alexandre Farto, also known as Vhils, spent several hot summer days carving the likeness of Serhiy Nigoyan into the battered facade of a building in Kyiv.

Nigoyan was the first protester killed during the Euromaidan Revolution in January 2014, and his death became a symbol of the movement's call for dignity and democratic reform.

This art carries a sombre tone, and its medium reflects its subject matter. There is no paint. Vhils true to his style, literally chiselled out the surface, allowing shadows to provide the colouring. It feels less like a mural and more like the city revealing a memory it refuses to forget.
