Overview

Weighing faith in industry against ancient craft.

Belgian artist Wim Delvoye builds trucks and diggers that look like they’ve been carved out of cathedral windows. It’s industrial machinery, completely reimagined into delicate, gothic-style patterns that you'd more likely see in a European church than a worksite.

His sculptures embody both seriousness and playfulness, full of contrasts: weight and air, old and new, practicality and ornate.

But what is the underlying message of this art?

According to Wim, the aim is to highlight the clash of values: medieval craftsmanship designed for the sacred versus modern machinery focused on profit and endless construction.

By merging these two worlds, he invites us to reflect on how much faith we now place in industry and growth, similar to how earlier generations invested their beliefs in building cathedrals.
