Overview

A lovely space between celebration and nostalgia.

At first, Chilu’s “I can’t wait for you to meet her” captivates with pure playfulness. It catches your eye and imagination straight away. How can you not be taken by the unicorn floating through soft, cotton-fluffy clouds?

The longer you look, the more the work shifts. The light dances across the surface, scattering into soft prismatic colours and you start noticing how carefully every fold and crease has been painted. Then you notice that the balloon’s slightly deflated.

There’s something gentle in that moment. Like a memory that’s lost its air but not its warmth. WIth beauty, celebration and nostalgia all sitting together. It reminds me of looking back on my dad, who passed a few years ago. The way a good memory can make you smile and ache at the same time.

Perhaps I'm reading too much into it, though that’s the thing about good art, it gives you room to bring your own story to it.

Taking a less introspective step back, I’m amazed by how sensory it feels. You can almost feel the cool, soft air moving around it and imagine the faint crinkle of the balloon. It’s visceral, like your mind filling in the sound and touch.

If you follow her on socials, I really love how open she is about her process and thoughts. It’s encouraging, honest and uplifting.
