Project Information

How we visualise the unknown? What does the world outside ours look like?

H.R. Giger took us there with his incredible imaginings of biomechanical nightmares that feel both ancient and futuristic. He literally had nightmares and sleep paralysis that inspired many of his own creations. Essentially he was painting his own demons.

Taking cues from Dali's surrealism and Timothy Leary's psychedelic explorations, Giger created something entirely his own, a disturbing fusion of mechanical and organic forms that's impossible to forget once you've seen it.

Most people know him for creating the Xenomorph in Ridley Scott's 'Alien,' but his influence runs deeper through design culture. I see a strong influence on the Borg from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Sadly, he passed away aged 74 on the 12th of May, 2014 but the visual language he created continues to ripple through science fiction, gaming, music and even architecture.
