Overview

Between its sharp lines and moody reflectivity, the futuristic R1 (71-410), otherwise known as 'Russia One' looks like it was designed for a world that hasn’t quite arrived yet.

It’s Blade Runner meets Batman meets iPhone on rails. Designed by Alexey Maslov with visualisation work by Yegor Kalynychenko, this tram pushes the vision of what tomorrow’s transport could actually look like.

Everything about this concept challenges the norm.

As Skam puts it, “One of the main objectives of the R1 tram is to change residents' attitudes to the very idea of public transport.” It's fair to say, it does exactly that.

The concept has been dubbed “vehitecture” which, I’ll admit, isn’t my favourite phrase. Though the idea of transport as architecture in motion? That’s quite neat.

Sadly, despite its Red Dot Design Award in 2014 and a healthy dose of international acclaim, the R1 never made it to full production. But as a design object, it still holds up.
