Overview

Pixel Perfect London: Mind the Map.

eBoy is a pixel art group founded in 1997 by Kai Vermehr, Steffen Sauerteig and Svend Smital. They are true pioneers in this form and have influenced an entire digital generation with their meticulous, unmistakable style.

They’re best known for their Pixorama poster series, which are cityscapes built as hyper-detailed, isometric pixel art. Every element is composed of tiny coloured squares stacked to create a kind of pseudo-3D depth that rewards close inspection.

Take London as an example.

It took the trio around two months of full-time work to create. I’ve got a print hanging in my studio, and what I love most about it (aside from its sheer scale and coolness) is how filled it is with pop culture references. It’s a ‘Where’s Wally,’ but for an entire location. You can pause and take in the work, which then gradually reveals itself layer upon layer.

Yes, there’s Tower Bridge, but.. lean-in, you might see a gorilla. Or the Queen. Or Speed Racer. Or John Cleese. Or just the Beatles mid-crosswalk.

When I asked Kai if there’s a small detail people tend to overlook, he said,
‘Maybe the feisty clouds. We really love them. But who knows, maybe that’s the first thing people notice!’

It’s definitely worth checking out their work and, honestly, worth owning.
