Overview

Making pencils forget they are pencils.

Cj Hendry built her name on impossibly detailed drawings of everyday things. With Rorschach she turned mirrored inkblots into what looks like fresh pools of paint.

At first glance each piece reads as thick, wet oil. Look closer and every ripple and shine reveals coloured pencil. That up close reveal is the quiet flex Cj does so well.

Even the show refused to be standard. Visitors entered through a bounce house with padded walls, a nod to the test’s psychiatric roots.

The exhibition ran in Brooklyn from April 10 to 21, 2019.
