"As long as mankind has existed, it has always looked to a god or gods to explain things in life that we cannot control, such as death and life after death, but also natural phenomena such as weather conditions and natural disasters. Despite our increasing knowledge in the fields of mathematics, physics and science (the focus of this university), people continue to find something to hold on to in a form of belief."

Overview

I like the idea that a wall can brighten someone's day..

.. and I think this one tells that story.

At scale, this project is monumental, measuring 8 metres wide by 13 metres tall.

Joren Joshua created this mural at the University of Naples Federico II (@uninait) as part of #Hollandandme. Developed by INWARD ( and the Dutch Embassy and Consulate General in Italy, the project brought Dutch artists to six Italian cities, exploring the connection between art, local communities and contemporary social issues.

The composition is really well balanced and confident. There's plenty going on, but it never feels busy. The drawing is beautifully handled, and there's a lot to enjoy without having to think too hard about it.

For me, what makes this work so good is that you don't need the title, Joren's explanation or the original brief. You can simply look at it and think, "I really, really like that."
