Once the tree is injured, it ‘bleeds’ resin formation, thus enclosing the wound. This principle of wound closure is shown in jewellery manufacturing by the broken piece maple closes it fills the mould with a novel bio-resin. Each part consists of a broken piece of maple wood, hand-sorted is loving and unique, hand-poured, hand sanded and hand-packed. It is deliberately not on serial number. Each part has its own name and its own packaging and is therefore unique as each individual person.

Overview

Self-healing inspiration.

MANUFRACT, led by German designer Marcel Dunger, was inspired by the way trees heal themselves. Observing how trees bleed resin to mend their wounds, he wondered if jewelry could do the same.

He works with broken pieces of maple wood, filling the cracks with a clear, plant-based resin. This process isn't exactly a fix; rather, it is more like an embrace. Each piece is crafted by hand, one at a time – without molds, batches, or duplicates.

And perhaps that’s the point, it’s not perfection, it’s repair. Honest, thoughtful and beautifully done.
