This one’s quietly extraordinary.

Based in Shanghai, artist Phil Akashi created a portrait of Nelson Mandela using a boxing glove and black cinnabar ink – delivering 27,000 individual punches to stamp the Chinese character for “freedom” across a massive canvas. The result is a portrait that you feel as much as you see.

The number wasn’t chosen lightly. Each punch stands for a day Mandela spent in prison. 27 years, rendered in quiet, relentless repetition.

The entire piece was created in a graffiti park, but unlike its spray-can surroundings, this work has a kind of meditative weight to it. You can almost sense the discipline in each mark.
