Overview

Four years and thirty prototypes.

Aesop's collaboration with Sydney designer Henry Wilson on this brass oil burner took four years to develop, which tells you pretty much everything you need to know about how seriously they took this project.

The burner is made using lost-wax casting, an ancient technique where a wax model gets coated in ceramic, fired in a kiln (the wax melts away), then filled with molten brass.

Each one weighs almost 1 kilogram (900gms), so it has real heft to it. After casting, the pieces get tumbled in drums with stones and water for eight hours to refine the surface.

The brass will oxidise and develop its own patina over time, especially if you live near the ocean. Of course, you can always polish it back if you want, but the patina is kind of the point.

It's one of those rare things that works as both a functional object and a sculptural piece you actually want to look at. The nice thing too is that it even though small object, it's substantial enough to quietly shift the whole feeling of a room.
